Precision parts are rarely made by hand anymore, with CNC machines now used to speed up the production process and make it more precise than ever before. Many of these machines work off of 3 axis points, which are X, Y, and Z, but there are some that have 5 axis. The question then becomes what are the 5 axis on a CNC machine? That would be some combination of A, B, and C, which are the axis that rotate about the X, Y, and Z axis. It can all get a little confusing to the layman, but all you really need to know is that 5 axis CNC machines deliver a level of precision that cannot be matched. It is usually the aerospace industry that has the majority of their parts made by these types of machines.
As you might imagine, those costs of these machines is extraordinary, which is why so many companies are willing to outsource the production of their parts to CNC machining centres like CAM Machine. Many companies have been able to get by with using a 3 axis machine, but as their parts become more complex, the need for the precision delivered by a 5 axis CNC machine becomes all the more apparent.
The 5 axis machines are able to cut simultaneously on both sides, which means they can make just about anything you care to throw at them, no matter how complex. They do take a higher level of programming, as you might expect, but once the software is in place, these machines can essentially operate without any kind of human interaction. These machines have a personal robotics system in place that removes the need for human intervention, although most CNC machining centres will still have qualified engineers on duty to oversee the whole process.
Some of the more complex parts that are produced by CNC machines involve angles and geometrics that simply cannot be achieved by a 3 axis machine. The answer to those issues are the 5 axis machines, so it’s no wonder that the aerospace industry was the first to really get on board the 5 axis train, as they require a level of precision and efficiency in their parts that are very tough to achieve. There are many companies that are just now learning about the advancements made in machining, but that was most certainly not the case for the aerospace folks, as they have been employing this method of production for as long as it has been around.
If you are interested in this type of work, and have blueprints that you need looked at, you should really ask your local machining centre, “What are the 5 axis on a CNC machine?” They can explain in greater detail exactly what these machines can do, and how they can help you become that much more efficient in the production of your parts. If you are unable to advance your manufacturing because of restrictions in what your machines can do, outsourcing to a company that has 5 axis machines might be the way to go.
