History of Engraving

Engraving is the process of incising a design onto a flat surface by cutting grooves into it. The surface will generally be flat, but it is of course possible to engraving round objects. Take a fountain pen or a wrist watch as two fine examples. When gold, silver, steel, or glass is used as the material for engraving, the result may be a decorated object. When copper or other materials are used, engraving can be used to provide an intaglio plate or printing images. In this case the images would be called engravings.

The history of engraving goes back many centuries, and the first engraved things to be found would be maps and prints. Further along the line, engraving was used for commercial illustrations and reproductions for magazines and books. This process however has long since been replaced by photographic processes. The reason for this is that printmaking is far less time consuming and easier. Historical engraving has also been replaced by etching.

Traditional engraving techniques are still used today by goldsmiths, glass engravers, and by gunsmiths. A watch with a hand engraved message is probably the best example of where traditional engraving is still used in the modern world. Cheaper objects will be engraved by laser or by photoengraving. Although to the untrained eye there is very little difference, it is always possible to detect where true hand engraving has been used.

In the ancient world, gems were engraved. This tradition was revived in the Renaissance, and although it is sometimes known as sculpture instead of engraving, the same tools and techniques are used.

Modern CNC engraving is a far cry from the ancient art of hand engraving, but hand engraved objects will always have a place in today’s society. If you are looking for a gift that is not just special but extra special, one that is hand engraved is always the best choice. For a different type of extra special gift, invest in a CNC engraving tool and try your hand at engraving yourself at home with your desktop mill or CNC machine.
