CNC Machined Parts : The Five Axes of Power

When it comes to modern day CNC machine shops, those that are still working with only 3 axes are rapidly being left behind. Dealing with 5 axis machining for the creation of CNC machined parts however is not as simple as it may seem. One industry where it really starts to get complicated is in the aerospace industry. Here, everything needs to be considered; from your tooling to your toolpaths and the finished piece.

Undoubtedly, adding more axes into the equation complicates the process. But it also adds power, strength, agility, speed, and much more. The selection process for toolpaths instantly becomes complex, as does the machine itself. So, why are 5 axes being used for CNC machined parts, and in particular in the aerospace industry.

CNC Machined Parts : The Aerospace Industry

CNC machined partsWhen we take a look at the complexity of the aerospace industry, it becomes very apparent as to why 5 axes are better. The parts made and required within the industry have complex geometrics, and they don’t lend easily to 3 or 4 axis machines. Although it is possible to make the same parts with fewer axes, it would require continual re-fixturing.

Another key consideration is the weight reduction that is gained by using a 5 axis machine. After all, when talking about the aerospace industry we are talking about building a machine that is capable of flying. So, here the ultimate goal is to produce the highest caliber of CNC machined parts, but keeping the weight down to a minimum. For some components of the aerospace industry, you will find that you actually need 6 or 7 axes to produce the parts that you need.

CNC machined parts made for the aerospace industry are also oddly shaped. Unique parts in awkward shapes are difficult to manufacture, and the more axes you have to work on, the simpler production becomes. It is also important to understand that for aerospace part, you need to find a machine that will produce the tolerance of part you require; finding a machine that will live up to its specifications is extremely important.

Pricing

When it comes to the aerospace industry, the cheapest price is most definitely not the best. You can ill-afford to make mistakes within the aerospace industry. You are making parts that are designed to fly. Price should be the least of your worries when finding a machine to produce the parts you need. As you add more axes to a machine, you will see a sharp shift upwards in price. But this price tag is well worth the money you pay.

Once you have a 5 axis machine in your workshop, you have the power to create the very best quality and most obscure parts. You will have an advantage over your competitors, and will leave them behind when you can produce better quality parts in less time, meaning that your new investment will soon pay for itself many times over.
