A CNC mill machine can create all kinds of different precision parts made from a wide variety of different materials. Unlike the old days when this type of work was done meticulously by hand, today’s machines use software and computers to operate the rotating cutter. While this may lead you to believe that CNC machines are nothing more than fancy drills, the fact is they are a little more complicated. The average drill moves along a single axis and can only go in one direction, whereas the milling machine has as many as 5 different axis points that it moves along.
A company looking to have a precision piece of equipment made will have a blueprint that is programmed into the computer. Once it is loaded up and ready to go, the machine goes to work to quickly and efficiently create the piece. Some of these machines keep the cutter in the same place while the board that holds the materials moves in the required directions. It really does just depend on the type of machine being used.
A single machine can do all kinds of different tasks, such as drilling, panning, routing, and more, and all without any hands on human help. When cutting a material like metal, water may have to be added into the equation so that the metal doesn’t overheat during the milling process. That water is also used to move the sluice while the machine is in operation. What makes the CNC mill machine so special, and such a precise performer, is that it is able to essentially cut the material in a three-dimensional way, allowing for all sorts of precision cuts and shapes. Not everything has to be in 3D, though, as the CNC mill machines are also able to handle 2D shapes that require very intricate patterns. Just as with the bigger pieces, all that is required is the correct programming of the software.
As already mentioned, a number of different materials can be handles by these machines, but it is usually metal and hard plastics that are most commonly used. This is because they have the strength to stand up to the stress that they are put under while being cut. Softer materials may buckle or break under such pressure. Today’s machines are able to undertake a variety of different jobs, although the more complex 5-axis machines are typically used by the aerospace and aviation industry to make their parts. As well as the drilling and cutting, CNC machines can also do engraving of the industrial variety.
The machines are incredibly expensive to buy, which is why so many production companies now outsource their precision work o CNC companies that are able to handle all sorts of tasks. While you may think of outsourcing as being an expensive option, it’s actually a whole lot more affordable than you might imagine. This is because of the efficiency of the machines, and their ability to cut down on the amount of waste material.
