Micro Milling Machines : When Smaller is Better

Micro milling machines are becoming increasingly popular, and it is not hard to understand why. Think about advances in technology in general and you will understand the necessity for micro machines such as those found at http://www.cam-machine.com/cnc-milling/. Look at the size of your mobile phone and compare it to the one you had a decade ago. Look at your iPod and compare is to the chunky cassette player you used to use. Everything is getting thinner, computers, TV screens, everything. To manufacture slimmer parts, greater accuracy is required, and machines that work on a smaller scale.

Micro Milling Machines for Micro Components

Miniature components are the future for a diverse range of applications in all industries. The aerospace, automotive, and telecommunications industry are just three fine examples. Micro components are now generally made using moulds, this keeping the cost of the manufacture of the components down. Micro machines can mill parts with diameters as small as 0.1mm, this being a level of accuracy that is known as sub-micron.

Machining of Micro-Parts

The manufacture of moulds for micro components is a major challenge for CNC, the manufacture putting extreme demands on the milling industry that were not present just a decade ago. In order to machine micro-parts, miniature tools are needed, and these may have a diameter of as little as 100 microns. The spinning speed required can be as high as 150,000 RPM. The surface quality for micro millings needs to be at least 0.2 microns.

Optimisation of the CNC Industry for Micro Milling

The level of accuracy required for micro-milling has meant that the whole CNC industry has had to be optimised and synchronised. In order to successfully micro-mill parts, CNC workshops need smaller size cutters that can work at increased speed. Ideally, micro-milling requires 5-axis milling. A 5-axis CNC machine provides higher diversity, and the ability to tilt tools means that shorter tools can be used.

Micro milling machines work to such a high level of accuracy, that even a change in temperature can result in the failure to produce the correct part. Micro milling machines are required to be set apart in an environment of their own with controlled temperature, and away from any vibrations. A truck passing by outside could upset a machine, micro mills being isolated away from movement of any kind.

Micro milling is milling on a scaled down level, yet on a level that requires far greater accuracy. Micro-moulds are exciting new technologies, for the production of micro-parts. As well as scaling down the size of the tools and machines used, software, both CNC and CAD needs to be more advanced.  Micro milling is a growing industry and one where new and innovative techniques are being found every day.

The world is forever growing, the population rising, and towns and cities expanding. But the things that we use in everyday life are getting smaller and smaller. From your new laptop to your new TV with ultra-thin screen, the advances in technology are nothing short of amazing. But in order for these new innovations to have become a reality, CNC milling technology has actually been scaled down to ensure the parts too that are produced keep on getting smaller.
