Types of CNC machine commonly used in precision engineering today are not actually that different from when CNC was first invented as a technology that adapted existing machinery. There are still advances in CNC every day, and machines are still being retrofitted to this day. Below is a look at the most common types of machines used in CNC by experts such as those found at http://www.cam-machine.com.
Types of CNC : Milling Machines
Modern milling machines are designed with CNC in mind. Older manual machines however are often retrofitted. The process of retrofitting will ensure that the human hand is not needed to use the machine, computers used to control them instead. As well as ensuring hand wheels are replaced with electronics, old screws and fittings will be replaced precision engineered accuracy ball screws and mounts. CNC Lathes are very similar to milling machines. These are also commonly retrofitted with CNC technology.
Custom Built CNC Machines
As well as retrofitted machines, there are many types of CNC machine that are custom built for the purpose. These included CNC routers, 3D printers, plasma cutters, laser cutters, and pick and place machines. CNC routers are used for large work such as cutting of wood and metal sheets. A router can be set up on 3, 4, 5, or even 6 axes with today’s modern technology.

Plasma cutters are very similar to CNC router machines. However, their setup is not as powerful as they use a plasma torch instead of a heavy spinning tool to operate. CNC laser cutters are very similar to plasma cutters. The force behind a laser cutter is however far less destructive than that of a plasma torch.
3D printers are similar to routers. A 3D printer uses plastic to complete parts. This plastic is pushed through tiny holes, the process being capable due to the introduction of a plastic extruder. Pick and place machines are another common type of CNC machine. These work in a similar way to routers, picking up and placing objects in desired locations. Pick and place machines can be seen in all types of factory setup, allowing for the factory floor to be virtually free from human presence.
CNC is everywhere you turn. You will find CNC in all factories, and you will find CNC parts in all common household objects that use an electrical supply. Your home computer, your smart phone, and the car sat on your driveway all contain components that have been produced by CNC machinery.
Although some types of CNC have been around for longer than others, there is still place in the modern world for the first types of CNC machines. Large machines are still in operation. You will also see the introduction of many micro-milling and cutting machines. These machines have not replaced traditional technology however. They are simply complementing a technology that is constantly growing and taking over the world as we know it. Over time, more and newer CNC techniques will of course be introduced, but once again, standard CNC milling and cutting machines will still be required for larger and more traditional CNC processes.
