CNC machine safety is highly important for any precision engineering company. There are rules and regulations surrounding training and the correct use of machinery. These include aspects such as that of the correct use of safety gear, and the maximum number of hours someone can work without taking a break. Below however is a look at how CNC machines are designed to be safe. In fact they are a lot safer than traditional manual machines.
CNC Machine Safety : Cutting Tools
Modern CNC machines, as well as older manual machines that have been retrofitted will not work without a safety guard in place. The cutting tool and mechanism of the machine in question will not work until the guard is locked into position. This means that it is virtually impossible for someone to cut themselves when the machine is in operation. As CNC machines are not manually operated, there is no reason for anyone to come into close contact with the cutting tools whilst the machine is operational.
Instruction
Before anyone can use a CNC machine, they need to be given quality instruction from someone who is highly trained in CNC. Students will receive many hours of theory classes in CNC before they are even allowed to touch a CNC milling or turning machine. In the case that you have built your very own CNC machine, it is your responsibility to ensure you educate yourself on machine safety. There are plenty of guides online that you can download for free.

CNC Machine Safety : Routers
CNC routers are renowned for making a lot of dust. They are used to shape materials, wood and plastic being two of the most commonly used materials. Modern CNC routers have built in extraction systems, which mean no dust will be inhaled. Dust from such machines can cause irritation to the eyes and when inhaled can be very dangerous. CNC routers have an outlet that is used for extraction of these harmful particles. Also, CNC routers are fully enclosed, meaning no dust will escape into the environment.
Manual routers are far more dangerous can CNC systems. Their extraction process is limited and allows for dust to escape into the air. CNC routers are also generally operated from single phase electrical supplies. Unlike manual machines that are generally that run from three phase supplies, when a fault develops, a CNC router will cut of immediately. A single phase powered machine can be unplugged and relocated to a new socket with no complications. This makes single phase machines more convenient to use as well as safer.
CNC Machine Safety Doors
The vast majority of CNC machines work behind safety doors, and are completely enclosed. This means that in the case that sparks fly, or pieces of debris are emitted into the air, no one will be harmed. In all large CNC workshops you will see all of the above safety features and more. CNC machines may be powerful and strong, but working within the modern CNC industry is actually a very safe career to choose.
