In the machining and manufacturing industries, CNC turning machines are proving incredibly advantageous, for a whole host of different reasons. CNC stands for Computer Numerically Controlled and it is basically a specialist process in which top-of-the-range computers have been designed to read code instructions in order for it to operate a tool. CNC turning machines are a testament to the fact that, as modern technology is evolving, in order to stay relevant and in order to get ahead in the manufacturing industries, companies should embrace this technology as opposed to fearing it. Whereas in the past, manually operated machines such as routers, shaping machines, boring machines, centre lathes, and vertical milling machines were all the rage, times have changed, and they are now holding some companies back. Here’s a look at a few benefits associated with CNC machines, as well as a couple of potential drawbacks.
Benefit – They Can Be Operated Continuously
One of the main reasons why these machines and devices have proved to be so popular and so efficient, is the fact that they can be operated continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year, if so decided. This obviously improves productivity and work efficiency a great deal. In the case of manually operated machines, if the operator was to require a toilet break, was to run another errand, or was simply to take a lunch break, without an operator, the machine would not be working. With CNC machines however, the machines run continuously, which obviously increases productivity a great deal.
Benefit – Less Training Is Required
Another great benefit of CNC turning machines is the fact that less training is required for people to operate them. To operate milling machines and lathes etc, a great deal of training is required, which takes both time, and effort, and costs a lot of money in the process. As less training is required for workers to operate a CNC machine, this helps save the company in question, both time, and money.

Potential Drawback – They are Costly
As these machines are so incredibly popular and so incredibly efficient, obviously they don’t generally come all that cheap, so purchasing them can prove to be a costly investment. When companies do purchase them however, they do see them as investments because they make them huge amounts of money, and they make life a great deal easier in the process.
Benefit – Many Machines Can be Supervised at Once
Finally, the last benefit associated with CNC turning machines that we’ll be taking a look at today, is the fact that a large number of machines can be supervised and overseen by a worker at once. As mentioned, less training is required because truthfully, once programmed and switched on, the machines can then be left alone to do what they do best. Of course, cutting tools and various components may need replacing occasionally, but generally speaking, once switched on, many machines can be overseen and supervised by just one worker.
