There are various types of materials that are used in CNC machined parts. Each of these materials is beneficial to the process. Here are some of the materials used.
Aluminum
Many machined parts are made of aluminum. It is a popular material to use because it is both cost effective and plentiful. High-tech industries often use aluminum parts to build machines. Since aluminum is strong but light, high tech industries benefit from the material because it can help make devices weigh so little that transporting them is easy to do. Another reason that aluminum is so often used is because it resists corrosion, making it useful when applied to various applications. Short run machined parts are often used in CNCs. Machined parts that contain aluminum are commonly used in industries such as medical and automotive. They are also often used by the military.
Within the aluminum family there are several alloys commonly used in CNC machined parts. One of them is brass, which is used in most of the latest technological products. Brass must be machined using different methods than those that would be used for materials such as steel. This is due to the fact that brass is easy to cut because it is so soft. Other benefits of using brass in machined parts are that they are high density material, very repeatable and they possess non-sparking properties. Since brass is so high density it is often used to create inflexible products.
Carbon steel is also a machined material. Most grades of carbon steel are considered free cutting materials. The alloy steel grades that can be machined are C1018, C1045, C1117, C11L17, C1141 and C1144.
When tool steels are machined different grades of alloy require the process to be done with different cutting tools, speeds and feeds.
To some degree it is also possible to machine stainless steel. Depending on the particular alloy there are various degrees to which the steel can be formed. Steel machined parts are often used in screws, connectors and sockets. They are also used in the medical field as well as the automotive and gun industries.
Chromium-nickel alloy parts are typically used in chemical and food equipment as well as applications used in architecture. Straight chromium alloy is used in turbine blades, fasteners and pump shafts. Those this type of alloy is magnetic treating it with heat can harden the material.
Beryllium Copper
CNC machined parts often contain Beryllium Copper as well. It is used in things such as computer and fiber optic components as well as precision measurement devices and electrical connectors and contacts. It is also used in the fields of aerospace and telecommunications. Treating Beryllium Copper with heat can make it stronger and more durable. It can also enable the conduction of electricity. Types of copper alloys often used in machined parts include C17300, C173, ASTM B-196 and M25.
These are the types of materials that are frequently used in various machined parts.
