Becoming a computer numerically controlled miller (CNC Miller) is something not many people know how to do. Someone working in this position is expected to be able to work with various types of machine tools. The smallest of these machines are attached to a work bench while the largest are production machines.
Tools That Must Be Used
A CNC Miller must be able to use grinding, milling drilling and turning machines as well as various planers and shapers. They are expected to understand how to use both boring mills and lathes as part of the job.
Lathe
The most basic machine anyone working in this position will use is the lathe. The machine’s features are used to design machines with similar purposes. A turner is used to set up any material that the miller needs to work on. It then continuously rotates and changes the cutting edge being used in order to get rid of excessive metal that is not needed. This machine also serves the purpose of making internal threading and boring holes into materials.
The purpose of any milling machine is to ensure that a surface is as flat as it can possibly be. It is also used to cut the teeth on tools that need to grind gears.
CNC Machinist
A CNC Machinist must be able to properly use a CNC machine which is created by craftspeople with highly polished skills.
Factories
A qualified CNC Miller can easily get a job at either a large factory or a small one. In order to be able to perform the job correctly they must be able to stand on their feet for long periods of time. Safety equipment will be a required part of the job, and this involves having to wear ear protectors and protective footwear in order to keep workers safe.
Skills and Qualities Needed
There are certain skills and qualities a person must have in order to successfully work as a CNC Miller. They must have excellent eyesight as well as hand-to-eye coordination. People working in this profession must be practical and able to both read and understand engineering instructions and drawings. They have to be very accurate and able to easily calculate the amount of time cutting a specific piece of material will take. This means that it is important to clearly understand what characteristics the materials being used possess. It is also helpful for them to be skilled typists who know their way around a computer.
Opportunities within the Field
The majority of millers work for general engineering firms but they can also get jobs in the shipbuilding, motor and aerospace industries. It is not unusual for someone who works as a miller to concentrate on the maintenance side of the job. Millers often work for companies that generate electricity.
Conclusion
Though there are limited opportunities in this industry, it is easy to become successful in the industry with the right skills and a desire to make a huge difference.
